The rationale for setting in place the DDQ project was that the market had failed to deliver a level of (housing and neighbourhood) design quality capable of supporting the vision for the Pathfinder area i.e. "delivering sustainable communities which support economic growth". Consequently, "quality spaces" is the centrepiece of Transform South Yorkshire’s activities.

The DDQ programme has proactively supported the public and private sector in over 90 projects since 2006. As a result we are already seeing evidence of rising quality standards in new housing developments, a number of top-class public realm schemes, higher skills levels amongst developers and the local authorities, and a far greater appreciation of the value of good design – and the costs of poor design.

DDQ is now moving into a new phase. In addition to the continued support to individual developments and projects, it will seek to ensure that learning and expertise become firmly embedded in mainstream activity. There will be a renewed focus on the sustainability agenda and on the quality issues relevant to the existing stock of older houses in South Yorkshire. Support at the sub-regional level will reflect the industry’s calls for greater consistency alongside the drive for increased quality, and will extend to the ambitious Doncaster and South Yorkshire Growth Point programme. Reflecting the increasing prominence given by the Government to the Building for Life standard, DDQ is putting in place a customised programme that will help ensure that South Yorkshire is well placed to take advantage of the opportunities that this will present.

This section of the website outlines the 4 themes through which the DDQ will be delivered. Each theme is explained, and examples of different projects and initiatives are given. The themes are:

  • Support
  • Culture Change
  • Sub-Regional
  • 'Building for Life' Assessments
