SY Residential Design Guide

New Residential Design Guidance for South Yorkshire Launched

Transform South Yorkshire (TSY) have launched a public consultation exercise on new residential design guidance for South Yorkshire, on behalf of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham Councils.

The initiative forms part of TSY's innovative DDQ (Delivering Design Quality) programme to achieve a step change in the quality of new residential development.

The new Guide is underpinned by the principles in Building for Life and Manual for Streets, and will provide a level of consistency for housing developers and their design teams throughout South Yorkshire in negotiations with the planning and highway authorities. All new residential developments of 10 or more dwellings will be expected to achieve a BfL standard of Good (14 points) or above.

Key elements of the Code for Sustainable Homes and Lifetime Homes are incorporated into the Guide, helping to simplify the design process for developers. It also sets out recommended space standards.

The Guide avoids setting prescriptive architectural standards, but focuses on the way in which new development should be integrated into the existing urban, suburban or rural environment – reflecting the character of South Yorkshire's neighbourhoods.

The Guide is being prepared by Studio Real, and is led by the planning and highway services from each Council, in collaboration with Transform South Yorkshire – the housing regeneration partnership.

The consultation runs until 23 July, and the draft Guide can be viewed here ›
