House Design Objectives

  • Create flexibility and adaptability. Capable of different physical arrangements - one room, open plan, subdivision into separate kitchen and dining area etc. Room layout to be able to accommodate/adapt to a range of social settings (from individual use, homework to day bed or for larger gatherings)
  • Avoid minimum space standard becoming maximum. Use space standards to check proposals but consider multiple use of space – circulation for play or storage, which may require more than minimum dimensions
  • Allow ability to extend by enabling connection to existing circulation space and services, and preventing an unacceptable loss of light
