A case study for Fryston country trail
Green Infrastructure can be described as a strategic network of accessible, multifunctional green spaces, or assets, positively managed to deliver a wide range of benefits to existing and future populations. The idea is to conserve, create, link and enhance assets during development in order to meet the needs of sustainable communities, both today and in the long term.
The fourth Design South Yorkshire Network Forum is taking place on March 25th 2010 and will be hosted by Wakefield Council at The Orangery in Wakefield from 1pm onwards.
The event sees DDQ team up with the 4x4 Making Places debates, which DDQ is also sponsoring. The afternoon will begin with a welcome from Ruth Rovira, Manager of the DDQ programme who is sponsoring the event and an introduction to projects that are taking place in Wakefield from Andy Wallhead, Corporate Director for Regeneration at Wakefield Council.
The event will begin with Chris Kwasniewski from the Homes and Communities Agency setting the context and providing some background to the National Coalfield Programme and how this has impacted on the Green Corridor area. This will be followed by an introduction to a case study project, the Fryston Country Trail in Castleford by Yorkshire Forward and the Council; and a presentation on challenges that Birse Civils encountered throughout the reclamation and housing provision in the area through Wakefield's Developer Framework by Bob Hall, Programmes and Partnerships Manager at Wakefield Council.
There will also be a short presentation on how the community have been kept informed throughout this project as the Fryston project is an excellent example of where green investment has had a positive effect on the surrounding community and the Green Corridor area.
Following a short break Chartered Civil Engineer, Richard Bickers from Arup, will round the day up with a related talk. Richard has a broad range of international engineering, regeneration and public realm design experience; from leading the engineering design team, working on the Bradford City Park and the regeneration of the Greengate area of Salford to designing an urban park in Madrid and helping to develop a masterplan for the redevelopment of Carlsberg’s brewery in the centre of Copenhagen. Richard will be taking part in a Q and A session after the talk.
