Tim Riley

Tim Riley is a director and co-founder of RCKa – a young urban design and architectural practice which specialises in housing, regeneration and community projects. Tim has an excellent design pedigree having worked with some of the UK's most prestigious practices and clients which has led to myriad design awards.

Completed projects include a number of publicly-funded projects with Patel Taylor Architects, such as the Peace Park Pavilion, Benslow Music Trust and Portland College, amongst others all of which have won RIBA awards. Tim has also been responsible for a number of large scale regeneration projects with Union North Architects for Urban Splash such as the Three Towers project in Manchester – another RIBA award-winning project; an exemplar scheme for residential refurbishment, bringing unwanted 1960's towers back into use as desirable private apartments.

Forming RCKa in 2006 allowed Tim to develop his interest in urban and housing design, MMC and develop his approach to sustainability.

Under Tim's leadership, an innovative, design-led and site-specific approach to urban regeneration projects has led RCKa to win a number of awards for housing and urban design, including the prestigious Europan 9 competition for a pathfinder site in the centre of Stoke-on-Trent. Tim is a visiting critic at the Bartlett School of Urban Design on the Masters course and has presented at the Europan 9 Forum in Santiago, Spain, on the subject of urban identity.

Tim has been key to RCKa's push towards Modern Methods of Construction, including the developing the use of timber infill panels in tower refurbishments or in new-build housing developments. The practice is working with a number of MMC manufacturers to develop cost-effective, sustainable house types which are carbon neutral, adaptable and suitable for both developers and self-builders.

Tim has a particular interest in sustainability and takes a holistic approach to ensure that appropriate sustainable solutions are well integrated into any development, reconciling the desire to reduce carbon footprints with the requirements of stakeholders from residents to developers.
