Rory leads the Arup Ecology and Environmental Assessment team in Leeds, which provides ecological services to a range of public and private sector clients primarily throughout Yorkshire. His experience has covered a wide variety of projects with particular experience of landscape scale and regional biodiversity issues, as well as Ecological Impact Assessments, protected species and habitat assessments.
Rory's main area of expertise is in landscape ecology such as the permeability of landscapes within an urban context and the wider integration of ecology and sustainability. He provides advice in relation to Green Infrastructure and the design of greenways within urban environments. He has considerable expertise in integrating ecology within the built environment, maximising opportunities to improve health and wellbeing benefits to residents and users. His capability in landscape ecology has ensured adoption of an Ecosystems Services approach into many of his projects within Arup. His experience has covered a wide range of projects from school sites to highways developments. Additionally, Rory's wider background encompasses landscape design and arboriculture within amenity/urban landscapes.
Rory's recent work includes identifying the Costs of Environmental Infrastructure Needs to Meet the North West Regional Spatial Strategy; the study examines the cost of environmental infrastructure to support growing communities in the North West, a region with a number of new Growth Point areas backed by Government for additional housing. Delivering ecological and environmental input for the Hanham Hall development in Bristol, which is the first of the Carbon Challenge series of sites to be developed in England. The principle aim is to accelerate the housebuilding industry's response to climate change. Providing and supporting the Masterplan for the regeneration of central Salford in Manchester. He is currently co-authoring a Good Practice Guide for Development of Previously Used (Brownfield) Sites for Open Green Space and Creative Schemes for CIRIA.
