Mark, the practice's Sustainability Champion, has a keen interest in sustainable design and has worked on a number of environmentally aware projects. A number of these projects have been assessed using BREEAM. He has worked on a wide range of building typologies including office buildings, hotels, leisure facilities, retail centres, hospitals, residential units and the refurbishment of historic buildings.
In addition to being one of the practices principle design architects, Mark's work over the past three years has included the development of the latest version of the practices Environmental Management System (EMS). To assist the development of the EMS Mark has conducted detailed research into low and net-zero carbon technologies and developed an integrated design management system that reflects seeks to ensure that design and technological solutions are considered and incorporated using a least cost methodology.
Mark also provides consultancy, design enabling and education for clients, design teams and constructors as well as operating as an internal consultant via design and technical forums. Mark has been engaged as an architect and as sustainability advisor for a number of high profile projects including the UK's first major PassivHaus scheme - PassivHaus is the worlds leading low energy/carbon performance standard - at Racecourse, Sunderland (the scheme is dual registered and shall achieve CSH Level 4) and the Riverside One Net-Zero Carbon development in Middlesbrough (a significant net-Zero-Carbon scheme for Bio-Regional Quintain). Lately, in preparation for CSH Level 6 schemes, Mark has begun to assist Gentoo (a regional housing association) with the upgrading a number of their standard house types so that they may satisfy the PassivHaus Standard. He is also working with Gentoo on the Retrofit for the Future programme; using PassivHaus components the project is targeting an 80% reduction in carbon emissions without recourse to using bolt-on renewable technologies.
Recently Mark has been commissioned too improve the knowledge and skills of project teams that are seeking to achieve excellence in design and sustainability. To this end teach PassivHaus Planning Package (PHPP) via the CarbonLite Programme that is run by the Association for Environment Conscious Building. This initiative will no doubt play a critical role in the delivery of the UK governments drive for low and zero carbon buildings. In his spare time Mark facilitates the regional group of the AECB: The Sustainable Building Association and tutors architecture at Newcastle University, placing a strong emphasis upon integrated sustainable development. He has also presented and published a number of papers and articles on advanced glazing systems and various aspects of thermal performance.
