Matt is an award-winning urban designer and is a Director at Turley Associates, a leading UK planning and urban design firm where he is responsible for the procurement, design direction and project management for major design projects being undertaken by planning and design teams throughout Turley Associates network of offices throughout the UK. He is based mainly in Leeds.
Matt was appointed a CABE / CABE Space enabler in 2003, 2005 and 2009 and was appointed a CABE-accredited Building for Life Assessor in 2009. He was appointed as an enabler to Transform South Yorkshire's Delivering Design Quality panel in 2006 and 2009 and was appointed as an enabler / design advisor to the East of England Development Agency in 2006.
Matt's work has received awards and recognition from the Civic Trust, Building for Life, the RTPI and the former ODPM, and he has led design teams for winning entries in a range of design competitions including the £1.5 billion Elephant & Castle regeneration, London, 1998, the £10 million regeneration of Coventry's City Squares, 1998, and the redevelopment of Newbury Market Place in 2004.
Matt's current projects include the £150 million redevelopment of the former Terry's Chocolate site as a new, mixed use urban district for York (for GHT Developments), the regeneration of the Pilgrim Street district of central Newcastle as a new mixed use city centre quarter (for Brookfield), the masterplan and design code for an urban expansion to Aylesbury comprising 3,000 new homes, employment uses and community facilities (for Barwood Land & Estates), and the development of a masterplan for a new urban village of 1200 homes at Moss Nook, St. Helens (for Banks Developments).
Matt works with a wide range of public and private sector clients and regularly leads and coordinates consultant teams for complex urban design and regeneration initiatives. He has formerly undertaken design commissions in 17 countries throughout the world, and has worked for extended periods of time in the United States and in Egypt.
Matt attained an MBA with a focus upon 'Creativity, Innovation and Change' in 2006, and has responsibility for the development of company-wide business planning for the urban design team at Turley Associates. He regularly produces articles for professional journals, and undertakes both commissioned and non-commissioned research. Matt has taught / examined at Sheffield University and the University of California, and is currently a visiting tutor at Leeds Metropolitan University and at the International University in Venice.
