Alex Ely

Alex Ely RIBA is an Architect and founding partner at mæ LLP Architects. He is a CABE Enabler (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) and on the Transform South Yorkshire Delivering Design Quality Enabling panel working with public sector clients and local authority. He lectures internationally on design and policy at conferences including the EUNIC Studio Johannesburg, IPA Conference Dublin, CiH Annual Conference, The NHF Annual Conferences, and 100% Design. He was a finalist in the G4C Constructing Excellence New Generation Award 2007 and was identified by Arena magazine as one of the 'new classics': influential pathfinders helping to shape the early 21st century.

Alex leads mæ's work on sustainable urbanism and housing. The practice works with a wide range of local authorities, public agencies and Housing Associations on high quality housing regeneration, masterplanning, and new build housing design.

He is responsible for a number of policy and best practice publications including:

  • 'The London Housing Design Guide' for the Mayor of London
  • 'The Home Buyer's Guide: what to look and ask for when buying a new home' for CABE and Black Dog Publishing
  • 'Delivering Great Places to Live' a guide to the Building for Life Standard
  • 'The Building for Life Standard' part of the CABE and HBF Initiative, which has been adopted by the HCA
  • 'Housing Audit: Assessing the Design Quality of New Homes' for CABE
  • 'Better Neighbourhoods: Making Higher Density Work', for CABE

As an advisor Alex has worked with Government on a wide range of housing issues including:

  • 'Housing Standards', working with CLG and the HCA on Design quality standards
  • 'Modern Methods of Construction', as a member of The Housing Forum's Off-site manufacturing working group which advises the DTI
  • 'Housing Supply and Demand' working with the HBF, CML and ODPM on responses to the Barker Report 2004

Between 2002-05 Alex was a Senior Policy Advisor managing CABE’s work on housing and neighbourhood policy and best practice. In practice he has worked for Foster and Partners and Pierre d'Avoine Architects. He was project Architect for the award winning housing schemes the HangerHouse and The Slim House.
