Andrew is the director of a consultancy providing advice on architecture, schools and regeneration. He has been a member of Transform South Yorkshire (TSY) Design Panel for the past three years, and is also on the South West Enabling Panel. With Justine Leach, he has organised many training workshops on urban design, including the Design South Yorkshire 100 series for TSY during 2007/08 as well as for Design Liverpool, Oldham/ Rochdale Housing Market Renewal, and Manchester Salford Partnership. He is an accredited Building for Life assessor, and has carried out evaluations for TSY, the Thames Gateway and the HCA Kick-Start programme.
He has been an enabler for Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) for 7 years, providing design advice to Local Authorities on ten schools PFI and BSF projects, and is a member of CABE Schools Design Review panel. He is the author of several CABE publications including 'Picturing School Design' and 'Creating Excellent Secondary Schools', and is currently writing 'Creating Excellent Primary Schools', due for publication in autumn 2009. He was a founder editor of 'Century21Schools' magazine.
Andrew was formerly Head of Planning and Premises Service for Sheffield Local Education Authority, with responsibility as client for three schools PFI projects, a Building Schools for the Future pathfinder, and four Classroom of the Future schemes. Previously, for ten years, he was City Architect for Sheffield and head of a large multi-disciplinary award-winning design practice.
He has been involved in architectural education for many years, and was Chair of the RIBA Validation Committee. He has been external examiner at Liverpool and Newcastle Universities, and is now examining at the University of Central Lancashire. He is deputy Chair of Governors for Firs Hill Primary School in Sheffield. When not working in the field of design, he is a bassoonist with the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra, and has recently performed with them on a tour to Sardinia.
